Around the age of 5, when children enter the school system there is a shift in focus in terms of the child's education. The late educator Ken Robinson suggested that at this time, children start getting taught from their heads down. The focus is primarily on reading and maths. While most primary schools do have some sort of movement sessions, and art sessions - as a percentage across the overall week - those sessions are significantly less than the rest of the curriculum.

With this in mind, our first learning series is targeted at 5-8 year olds in their first 3 years of school life. They are a reminder to our children that connecting to our bodies through the creative arts is very important for our mental health. Our modules teach age appropriate mediation activities, explore different creative modalities for self awareness and expression and reinforce values such as resilience and grit.

As parents, our greatest wish for our children is to have strong mental wellbeing.

Learning about the creative arts as a supportive tool in our children's lives helps to support that hope. Child mental illness is on the rise, neurodivergent diagnoses are on the rise, and parents are struggling not only with all the conflicting and often confusing information that is now readily available to us, but also with the pace in which new theories, research and ideas are being circulated.

The Creative Toolbox is a pause and reset for all of us. It goes back to the things we loved as children such as painting, sound making, clay, dancing and writing stories. We loved them because they made us feel good, and helped our bodies feel calm and free. We didn't always know the science behind why colouring or painting relaxes us but we do now. Renowned researcher, Brene Brown talks about play being the core of creativity and innovation - qualities we need throughout our lives.
